Indiana Patent of the Month – November 2022

Most frozen yogurt and soft serve ice cream machines are limited to chocolate and vanilla or a swirl of both. The flavors are pre-mixed and dispensed when needed. Flavor Burst Co, LLP has developed a way to diversify these flavor options and bring more variety.

Flavor Burst are experts in flavors. The company has been developing flavor and candy injection machines for 30 years, building their technology through continuous innovation.

The company had previously developed and patented dry food additives and gel-based flavorings which can be easily mixed into any base product, including chocolate and vanilla soft serve. However, if not mixed well, the final product has a non-homogenous appearance, creating a marbled effect.

Flavor Burst’s new technology achieves a homogenous mix regardless of the base product or viscosity. It works for soft serve ice cream, ice milk, smoothies, slushies and more. Their freezer and dispenser uses a classic design of freezing a mixed base-product (e.g. soft serve) and dispensing this through a spout where a flavor injector is positioned. This spout and injector are connected to syrup lines which supply the flavor mixes. Their unique design achieves homogeneity by implementing specially designed mixing vanes. These vanes create a cross-hatched pattern which ensures the flavor mix reaches a large surface area of the base product as it is extruded, creating a quickly homogenous appearance and flavor.

By adding the flavor after the product is frozen and using syrup lines, the machine can achieve a multi-flavored soft-serve. Simply changing flavors mid-pour or taking flavors from multiple lines expands the world of flavor possibilities.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
