Iowa Patent of the Month – June 2024
With a newly granted patent, Athena GTX, Inc. has designed a new critical care unit that promises to revolutionize patient transport in emergency medical scenarios. This portable unit is ingeniously designed to fit entirely beneath a patient transport litter, providing essential life support and monitoring without obstructing access to the patient. Its foldable housing, divided into two sides, houses various crucial modules—control, ventilator, processor, and pump in one, and structural components or fluid containers in the other.
One of the standout features is the unit’s adaptability; it includes a quick coupling device that can attach to different-sized litters or function independently, ensuring seamless integration into various transport setups. Remarkably lightweight at under 30 pounds, the unit maintains high accessibility to the patient, crucial during critical interventions. The system’s design also incorporates advanced communication capabilities, allowing near real-time data exchange between the unit and remote medical teams.
The critical care unit achieves impressive versatility with peripheral device linkages, automatically recognizing and configuring linked medical monitors, IV fluid controllers, and ventilation devices, among others. It also features a unique suction reservoir to manage bodily fluids separately, maintaining hygiene and operational efficiency. For enhanced functionality, the unit can house multiple fluid containers, equipped with precision control mechanisms like linear actuator pinch valves and bubble detectors.
