Iowa Patent of the Month – March 2021
Plants and crops can face a great deal of stressors. Drought is one of the major stresses that limit crop productivity worldwide. Current research even suggests that crops which are in a water limited environment early on grow with different physiological changes compared to those which have sufficient water. So, water insufficiency has long term impacts on these crops. Pioneer Overseas Corporation has been isolating components and reconfiguring the DNA of some crops to improve drought tolerance and improve crop yield in the long term.
Their recombinant DNA has a specific polynucleotide linked to a functional promoter in a plant. This polynucleotide holds the DNA codes for drought tolerance polypeptides and flower time-regulating polypeptides. Their research focused on isolating the individual polypeptides that control drought tolerance so that they could be better activated in the plants. This improved drought tolerance allows for healthier growth of the plant even when water is limited. They also isolated polypeptides that control flowering timing. Plants with this recombinant DNA flower about a week earlier than the original plants. This earlier flowering time increases the seasonal yield for the plant product. The recombinant DNA improves crop quality and quantity.
