Iowa Patent of the Month – March 2025
Trace Genomics has introduced a powerful new method for predicting soil-borne crop diseases—before planting begins. The system uses genomics and AI to analyze soil microbes linked to post-harvest threats like Botrytis and Alternaria.
By sequencing microbial DNA in soil samples, the tool identifies organisms associated with disease pressure. Then, it compares those results to a regional database of samples treated with similar farming methods—such as no-till practices or cover crops. This comparison produces a percentile score that shows how risky the soil is for growing healthy crops.
Local data makes predictions more accurate
Unlike general soil tests, this method uses nearby sample data to provide context. For instance, if neighboring fields using the same techniques show similar microbe levels, farmers can better understand what to expect.
In addition, the tool factors in soil health indicators—like nutrient levels and root disease suppression. As a result, farmers gain a fuller picture of how their soil will affect crop performance.
A smarter path to sustainable farming
This innovation arrives at a critical time. As climate stress grows, tools that offer clearer insights can help farmers make better decisions. Trace Genomics’ system turns complex data into a simple, actionable report.
Ultimately, it helps growers boost yields, reduce losses, and farm more sustainably.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
