Kansas Patent of the Month – August 2021

CritiTech, Inc. conducts research and development into the production and application of fine-particle compounds in the biotechnology industry. THey have recently developed a combination therapy for the treatment of cancer, using both local and systemic therapies. This new treatment option combines antineoplastic particles with the systemic administration of compositions containing immunotherapeutic agents.

The local administration of antineoplastic particles can be applied in numerous ways, from topical to intracystic injection. When administered locally to benign tumors, these particles persist longer than when administered intravenously. This improved persistence can therefore better support systemic immunotherapy. For instance, it may help lymphocytes activate their immune response to the tumor without the toxicities of IV chemotherapy.

So the taxane or antineoplastic particles activate the immune response, kill tumor cells and then release tumor cell antigens which are attached to dendritic cells. These activated dendritic cells then provide tumor-specific antigens to T-cells which can then circulate and destroy cancer throughout the patient’s body. This effect provides both local and systemic indirect immune-system mediated cancer cell killing.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
