Kansas Patent of the Month – December 2021

The bulbospongiosus muscle, found in the perineum (the area between the anus and genitals), can be used in testing for spinal shock and providing information into the state of a spinal cord injury. Specifically, the bulbocavernosus reflex (BCR) is used to gain this insight, as measurements of the reflex can indicate various neurological abnormalities surrounding the pelvic floor and lower spinal region.

UroVal, Inc. has designed their own BRS – Bulbocavernosus Reflex System – to evaluate the BCR latency. Their device uses piezo-electric disposable tips, making it the only non-electrical stimulation device of its kind. The procedure just requires a simple tap to effectively acquire results. The probe, which contacts the patient’s skin, provides a mechanical stimulus to induce the reflex and detects the pressure resulting from the force of contact. This then electronically initiates the capture of electrical responses from a series of electrodes on the patient’s skin. These electrical responses are then tracked by their associated software, easily displayed for analysis. This data includes the BCR response and any latency in this response.

This system provides a non-invasive measurement of this reflex – something that most patients will be ecstatic to hear. A traditional BCR test applies pressure or electrophysiological stimulation to the penis or vulva and records results from the anal sphincter. UroVal’s non-invasive BRS circumvents this less-than-fun test.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
