Kansas Patent of the Month – December 2022

An aneurysm can happen anywhere in the body. These occur when the wall of a blood vessel swells or bulges abnormally. If it swells too much, it may burst, causing internal bleeding. Unfortunately, the main treatment procedure requires invasive surgery. In the case of cerebral aneurysms, this requires opening the skull and sealing the aneurysm with a small surgical clip.

Some attempts are minimally invasive, catheter-based, endovascular treatments have been attempted using a series of small metal coiled wires which fill the aneurysm sac and prevent occlusion. However, coil placement is difficult to control and may only partially fill the sac. Artio Medical, Inc. has designed a peripheral vascular embolization device meant to improve the outcomes of these non-invasive procedures.

The device is single-lobed, thin-walled, expandable, and flexible. The surface is made with gold and various metals that can be compressed, positioned, and expanded. The coiled wires can be placed immediately next to the single-lobed device. The wires must then contact both the wall of the aneurysm and the present device. The coils then exert force on the device which then expands and seals the aneurysm neck.

Artio Medical is a medical device development company focused on developing tools to improve patient outcomes. Their innovation targets the unmet medical needs in the peripheral vascular, neurovascular, and structural heart markets.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
