Kansas Patent of the Month – November 2021

IV fluids can vary from blood to saline to soluble medications delivered from a bag to the veins. These fluids are held in IV bags and often stored in cold environments to preserve the properties of the fluid. The bag is warmed before use with the patient but may not always heat up adequately. Cold fluids entering the bloodstream cause patient discomfort – something we want to avoid during medical procedures. Neonatal Product Group, Inc. has designed a specialized tube capable of warming the fluid as it flows.

Their design uses a tube and connector assembly which heats the fluids as they pass through. The device also monitors the temperature of the fluid as it passes to ensure it does not overheat nor underheat before reaching the patient. This tube connects to the IV bag and the IV needle. The tube is set up with an electrically conductive wire which allows an electrical flow. This current is what warms up the fluids. The temperature sensor tracks the fluid temperature using thermocouples, thin-film sensors, and other tools. This tube connects to the IV bag and the IV needle. Since the design is heating a smaller volume of fluid at any one time, it is more readily warmed compared to a large IV bag of fluid. This system improves patient comfort while receiving fluids with simple warming capabilities.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
