Exposure to lead is incredibly dangerous. Adult exposure can lead to cardiovascular effects, increased blood pressure, and hypertension amongst many other conditions. Because of these adverse effects, lead contamination systems are very important in our water treatment systems. Typical solutions for lead detection rely on various combinations of large and expensive equipment. Alternatives, like lead ion selective electrodes, are less expensive but have slow response times.
MKS Vision, LLC has designed a lead detection system with improved response times and reduced costs. The system uses a variable electrode set up with a mixture of lead ionophore II, carbon nanotubes, and a binder. A reference electrode is also included but only has the carbon nanotubes and the binder. An electrically connected meter generates a signal using the variable and reference electrodes. The signal is reflective of the concentration of lead in the water.
This design uses an interaction between the lead ionophore II and the lead in the water. This reaction transfers ions into the variable electrode at a rate representative of the concentration of lead in the water. This solution simplifies lead detection, removing the need for complex equipment or the limitation of slow response times.
