Kentucky Patent of the Month – July 2024
Compass Manufacturing International, LLC has revolutionized bathroom plumbing with their innovative pop-up drain assembly. This new system addresses the cumbersome and time-consuming installation process traditionally associated with sink drains. The core of this invention lies in its design which facilitates a quicker, more precise assembly, enhancing both the installer and end-user experience.
At the heart of this assembly is a cylindrical drain body with a unique three-section design: lower unthreaded, upper threaded, and a middle section with a perpendicular drain tee connector stem. This stem features a smooth section ending in a castellated section with pawls that ensure a secure connection. The horizontal pivot rod, integral to the mechanism, includes a spherical ball that fits precisely into the drain tee connector stem, snapped into place by the pawls. This snap-fit mechanism streamlines the installation, reducing the need for manual adjustments.
A lock ring adds to the assembly’s robustness. It consists of a hollow cylinder with wings and lugs that apply pressure to secure the pivot rod. The innovative design ensures the lock ring aligns perfectly, thanks to stop lugs that provide a positive stop for maximum locking force. The drain plug itself is ingeniously designed with a cap and longitudinal body, forming a cross that fits precisely into the drain body, guided by an arcuate lug.
This assembly also boasts improved sealing with a cambered edge flat ring, enhancing leak-proof performance. By incorporating a metal insert, the strength of the pivot rod is significantly increased, minimizing flex and ensuring longevity. Additionally, the quick installation features ensure that the pivot rod and lift rod align correctly, making the assembly process faster and more efficient.
Compass Manufacturing International’s pop-up drain assembly not only simplifies installation but also offers a durable, leak-proof solution, setting a new standard in bathroom sink drainage technology. This invention is a testament to their commitment to innovation and quality in plumbing solutions.
