Kentucky Patent of the Month – May 2021
The agricultural industry has used mineral and chemical fertilizers to help increase crop yield. However, they have negative impacts on the environment – reducing soil organic and mineral matter, suppressing native microbial populations, and reducing soil fertility. The fertilizer goes even further, seeping into the ground and polluting water sources. There have been some efforts to reduce these impacts. Using a fat or grease coating can help to create a control release fertilizer, extending the soil life. Another method uses a urease inhibitor to slow ammonia volatilization. Unfortunately urease inhibitors can cause necrosis in the plant tissue. OrganoCat, LLC has developed their own stabilized coating to help reduce these limitations.
OrganoCat created a stabilized ammonium humate mixture using humic acid, ammonia, and water. The final mix has a pH between 9.5-11. Once the fertilizer granules are coated in this mixture, they dry rapidly and remain granular. The coating reduces nitrogen loss while increasing phosphate and potassium storage. Through a series of experimentation, OrganoCat found the right ratios to prevent the limitations associated with ammonium humate manufacturing. For instance, traditional methods and ratios result in a slurry that is hard to separate into particulate and liquid matter.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
