Kentucky Patent of the Month – May 2025
A breakthrough in microfabrication could reshape how microfluidic devices are made and used. U.S. Patent No. 12296509, titled ‘Microfluidic device and method of manufacture’, introduces a novel technique that forms internal channels within a mold using magnetic or electric fields—eliminating the need for traditional layering or bonding.
Dynamic Molding with Embedded UV Curing
Developed by Hummingbird Nano, Inc., the method employs a responsive substrate—such as a polarized, non-spherical particle—embedded with its own UV light source. Guided by external fields, this substrate moves through viscous, UV-curable material to carve out channels. As it moves, it simultaneously cures the material around it, creating complex internal geometries in a single step.
Precision Without Complexity
This approach allows for the creation of intricate microchannels without the alignment challenges of conventional methods. The result is a seamless, monolithic structure with reduced dead volume and improved fluid dynamics. Applications span from biomedical diagnostics to environmental testing, where precise fluid control is critical.
Scalable Innovation for R&D and Industry
By simplifying the fabrication process and enhancing design flexibility, this technology offers a scalable solution for producing high-performance microfluidic devices. It holds promise for accelerating research and development while reducing manufacturing costs.
