Louisiana Patent of the Month – January 2022
Variable speed drives (VSD) have been useful in applications such as HVAC systems, where they can allow for greater control of fan speeds as opposed to using dampers to control air volume. These systems help to manage energy to vary the speed of a normally fixed motor speed. While they have proven very helpful in controlling power usage, they aren’t quite as good at reducing energy consumption and often introduce electromagnetic interference.
Geocent, LLC, an information technology company has developed a solution with the design of a hybrid electric VSD. The company, which was recently acquired by Sev1Tech, LLC. is known for their innovations in the industry leading to digital transformations and novel solutions.
Their hybrid electric VSD uses Field Oriented Control (FOC) algorithms to control an alternating current induction motor (ACIM). This algorithm controls motors by controlling the torque and thus the speed of the motor. It also controls the current to the motor. With better and independent management of the torque and magnetic flux, a maximum torque can be achieved with greater efficiency.
Their design can accomplish all three goals, effectively increasing energy efficiency, reducing the emission of electromagnetic interference, and increasing the life of various components. This means the battery powered systems they are used in will benefit from increased energy availability – better battery life for your automobiles and even has implications for space-based applications.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
