Louisiana Patent of the Month – March 2025
ARIX Technologies has developed a new robotic device that redefines how machines travel across pipes. Unlike traditional crawlers, this robot moves without magnets, offering a lighter and more energy-efficient solution for complex industrial environments.
Ditching magnets for smart mechanics
Most existing robots use magnets to stay attached to metal pipes. However, magnets add significant weight, limit battery life, and fail on insulated surfaces. In contrast, ARIX’s design uses a clamping system with multiple roller wheels. These wheels apply force from different angles to keep the robot securely in place.
Because it doesn’t depend on magnetic pull, the robot can inspect a wider variety of surfaces. This makes it ideal for industries that use insulated or non-metallic pipes.
Designed for real-world obstacles
The robot’s modular frame and flexible arms adjust to different pipe sizes. Each wheel includes freely rotating rollers, allowing the robot to move over valves, bends, and supports. As a result, it can navigate surfaces where traditional robots often fail.
Additionally, its design spreads contact across the pipe’s full curvature. This improves grip and reduces slippage, even on vertical or uneven surfaces.
A safer, more adaptable future
This innovation from ARIX Technologies improves both safety and efficiency in pipe inspection. With fewer power demands and no need for magnets, it offers a smarter way to inspect vital infrastructure—without compromise.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
