Louisiana Patent of the Month – May 2025
Advano Inc. has developed a new scalable method to produce nano silicon particles for lithium-ion batteries. The breakthrough aims to cut costs, boost performance, and meet growing energy demands.
Efficient Production of Nano Silicon
U.S. Patent Application No. 20250145474, titled ‘Nano silicon particulates and method to make them’, outlines a process using mechanical milling in specific solvents to create nanoscale silicon. The method reduces energy use and production time while avoiding the need for surfactants.
Enhanced Battery Performance
The nano silicon is embedded in a carbon matrix, forming porous secondary particles. These structures better handle the volume changes that typically degrade silicon anodes, improving battery life and stability.
Scalability and Cost Impact
Unlike lab-scale methods, Advano’s process is designed for mass production. It could slash the cost of silicon nanoparticles from up to $10,000 per kilogram to as low as $15. This positions the technology as a key enabler for next-gen batteries.
Real-World Applications
High-capacity anodes made with this nano silicon can deliver longer-lasting, faster-charging batteries. That means better electric vehicles, smarter phones, and broader adoption of renewable energy systems.
