Louisiana Patent of the Month – November 2021
Containment berms are commonly used to protect fuel trucks, oil-filled equipment, fuel tanks and anything of the like. When these containers leak in any way, it can lead to long-term environmental ground contamination. PacTec, Inc. is an expert in flexible waste packaging for difficult to contain products such as nuclear waste and contaminants. They have recently designed a flexible containment berg with a supportive hinge assembly specifically for liquid pollutants like petrochemicals to prevent this long-term contamination.
Their containment design is made of a flexible, impermeable polymer material. A series of hinges are positioned on the inside of the containment and connect the ground piece to the sidewall. The hinges are designed to be easily replaced without compromising their structural integrity. They stay in the upright position easily, providing spill protection without any trip hazards. When the hinges are folded inward, they allow the sidewall towards the ground section. The hinges cannot fold outward past an upright position for the sidewall. This ability to move between positions allows easy access to the maintenance site. With this design, the containment berm improves spill containment and functionality.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
