Maine Patent of the Month – July 2024

Peregrine Turbine Technologies, LLC has been granted a patent for a proprietary system designed to optimize the efficiency of thermodynamic cycles using supercritical fluids. This innovative system precisely determines the temperature of supercritical fluids, such as supercritical carbon dioxide, within a closed cycle.

Peregrine Turbine Technologies is developing the tools and systems needed to bring power generation into a sustainable new realm. The company is addressing needs of future platforms for advances in integrated propulsion, power and thermal management; a total energy management system.

Central to the invention is a sophisticated setup featuring a conduit with a supercritical fluid compressor, pressure sensors, and a pair of transducers. The first transducer emits a sonic pulse through the supercritical fluid, which is received by the second transducer. By measuring the speed of sound through the fluid, the system accurately calculates its temperature.

This method leverages the relationship between the speed of sound, fluid pressure, and temperature, providing a high level of precision essential for maintaining the efficiency of the cycle. The system’s controller integrates data from the pressure sensor and transducers, computing the fluid’s temperature and adjusting the process in real-time to optimize performance.

One remarkable aspect of this technology is its ability to handle the unique challenges associated with supercritical fluids, particularly supercritical carbon dioxide, which operates at high pressures and temperatures. The use of sonic pulses to measure temperature circumvents the limitations of traditional thermometers, which struggle with the extreme conditions present in supercritical fluid cycles.

This breakthrough has significant implications for power generation and other industrial applications. By ensuring accurate temperature measurements, Peregrine Turbine Technologies’ system enhances the efficiency of power cycles, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. It marks a significant advancement in the field of thermodynamics, showcasing the potential of supercritical fluids to revolutionize energy systems and pave the way for more sustainable and efficient power generation technologies.
