Maine Patent of the Month – March 2021

Stump removal is required after extensive tree cutting. A traditional design for stump harvesting attaches to the end of an excavator arm, replacing the bucket that is normally there. These designs are inefficient and make stump harvesting harder than it needs to be. Some versions require multiple attachments to pull stumps and remove the excess dirt and rocks attached. National Attachments, Inc has redesigned this attachment to remove these inefficiencies.

Their design increases the speed and efficiency of excavating, cross-cutting, splitting, and loading tree stumps. The harvester attaches to the end of an excavator arm. The design uses a jaw shape where the back jaw has a knife arm and a splitter fang. The front jaw has a dual anvil. In a closed position the knife arm slides into a sheath along the front haws and the splitter fang rests between the dual anvils. This design can securely grasp a stump from above to remove it from the ground. The attachment is able to rotate enough to effectively shake rocks and first loose from the stump. The splitter fang and knife arm can also help to split logs as needed. This multifunctional attachment makes stump removal a more efficient process.
