Maryland Patent of the Month – June 2021
The healthcare industry regularly works to improve their patient management systems, including storage and processing of data. However, sometimes the patient is unable to communicate with the healthcare provider, reducing the quality of care possible. For instance, they could be unconscious, speak a different language, or have low communication skills. Pleiotek has developed a modern solution that overcomes these limitations.
They developed a Smart Band Aid solution, which processes data as well as functions as a regular band aid. It has a water-resistant encapsulation to house the electrical components, as well as an adhesive perimeter and absorbent padding. The processing system has a microprocessor and near-field communications (NFC) as well as a power supply. After the band aid is applied to the patient, it begins to facilitate the collection, storage, and processing of healthcare data. It can wirelessly connect with a mobile device and transmit data for storage. The band aid is also able to connect with applied biosensors such as heart monitors, sweat monitors, and so on. As it connects, it gathers, stores, and transmits the data to the healthcare provider’s smartphone, delivering data and vitals in the field. This provides a dual purpose solution for healthcare, and removes can quickly remove or reduce a communication barrier.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
