Maryland Patent of the Month – June 2025
Researchers at Antidote Therapeutics Inc. have unveiled a breakthrough in nicotine addiction treatment. U.S. Patent No. 12318433, titled ‘Nicotine degrading enzyme variants’, protects newly engineered enzymes that break down nicotine in the body before it can affect the brain. This innovation could change how we treat tobacco and vaping dependence.
Designed to destroy nicotine faster
These enzyme variants are designed to work faster and more effectively than natural enzymes. By targeting nicotine directly in the bloodstream, they help prevent the addictive chemical from reaching the brain. As a result, the body may stop forming the cravings that fuel long-term addiction.
Offering a fresh path to quitting
Unlike nicotine patches or gums, this approach doesn’t supply more nicotine. Instead, it clears it out. Because of this, the treatment may help reduce the risk of relapse. It also supports people who are trying to quit newer products like e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco.
Moving toward real-world impact
With this patent, Antidote Therapeutics is aiming to lead a new wave of addiction therapies. These enzyme variants could form the basis of future drugs that treat nicotine dependence at the source. As the next step, clinical testing may determine how quickly this innovation can reach patients.
