Maryland Patent of the Month – March 2025
Innovative Cellular Therapeutics (ICT) has been granted U.S. Patent No. 12,240,915 for a novel CAR-T cell therapy designed to fight solid tumors. This development could expand the reach of immunotherapy, which has so far shown more success in blood cancers.
How the Invention Works
The patented therapy engineers T cells to express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) that targets specific molecules. These include receptors for the hormone kisspeptin or certain siglec proteins—markers often found on solid tumors. By using these unique biological targets, the treatment may improve accuracy while limiting harm to healthy tissue.
Why It Matters
Traditional CAR-T therapies have struggled with solid tumors due to their complex environments and lack of reliable targets. ICT’s approach offers a promising solution. It provides a more selective attack on tumor cells, potentially reducing side effects and increasing effectiveness.
A Step Toward Personalized Cancer Care
If successful in clinical trials, this therapy could offer new hope to patients with cancers that resist conventional treatment. Furthermore, it aligns with growing efforts to develop precision medicine approaches in oncology.
As CAR-T technology continues to evolve, ICT’s innovation stands out as a step forward in the fight against solid tumors.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
