Massachusetts Patent of the Month – May 2022

Homemade ice cream is a truly delightful dessert – but making homemade ice cream is a huge hassle. The founders of ColdSnap, Corp. set out to revolutionize homemade ice cream, inspired by coffee pods and their ability to brew coffee rapidly. They began developing and testing prototypes, working towards a machine capable of producing homemade ice cream in 60 seconds or less – and without the mess.

A key component to their design is the ability to rapidly cool food, drinks, and specifically ice cream. Their device can make soft-serve ice cream from room temperature pods in 60-90 seconds, and completely frozen in 2 minutes. The pods are filled with ingredients to make the desired flavored ice cream, sterilized, and sealed. The ultra-heat treatment used to sterilize the pods allows the pasteurized dairy ingredients to be shelf-stable in non-refrigerated storage for 9-12 months.

The device uses a refrigeration system to cool the pods. The system has a compressor with a two-phase refrigerant fluid. The compressor has a variable motor speed. Rapid speeds are used in the first 45 seconds and slow down as the cooling cycle winds down. This increases the efficiency of the freezing process while maintaining the pressure drop. Between the rotary blades and the refrigerants, the pod is frozen and mixed rapidly to create a soft-serve texture.

To maintain sustainability and eco-friendly practices, the company has designed their pods to be infinitely recyclable so you can eat delicious ice cream and feel good about it.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
