Michigan Patent of the Month – April 2025

Crosby Innovations, LLC has secured U.S. Patent No. 12,263,257 for its “Far UV-C apparatus and confirmation of use,” introducing a device that sanitizes human skin and eyes without harm. This innovation could transform hygiene practices in healthcare, food service, and public spaces.

Precision UV-C Light Targets Germs, Not Humans

The patented device employs UV-C light-emitting diodes (LEDs) emitting wavelengths between 205 and 210 nanometers. These wavelengths are effective against microorganisms but do not penetrate human tissue. LEDs are positioned on both upper and lower internal surfaces, creating a 240-degree light field for thorough exposure.

Designed to disinfect hands, gloves, and even ocular tissue, the device includes safety features like visible indicators that signal when UV-C light is active. Its compact design and battery operation make it suitable for various environments, from hospitals to public facilities.

Real-World Impact on Hygiene Practices

Unlike traditional UV-C systems, which can harm human cells, this apparatus offers a safer alternative for routine disinfection. Its ability to sanitize without causing tissue damage makes it ideal for settings requiring frequent hygiene, such as clinics, food preparation areas, and public restrooms.

The innovation, credited to inventors Douglas A. Crosby and Fred Maxik, reflects a growing trend toward safe, efficient, and user-friendly disinfection technologies. As industries seek to enhance hygiene protocols, this device offers a promising solution.
