Michigan Patent of the Month – February 2023

Electrodes have long been the most direct way to interface with the nervous system. Unfortunately, this can be difficult when working with tougher tissue, such as spinal cords or peripheral nerves. NeuroNexus Technologies Inc., a leading developer in cutting-edge neural interface technologies, has patented a new electrode design, with rugged structure to penetrate even the toughest tissue.

Using a normal electrode on tough tissue would require excessive force to push the electrode in place. The new design is a ruggedized penetrating electrode with a balanced system to ensure surgeons can readily manage electrode insertion without damaging the electrode or hurting the target tissue. An elongated shank and structure better disperses pressure during insertion.

The system is not just limited to neuroscience and neurophysiological research but can be used in clinical therapeutic and diagnostic applications. The technology could significantly improve the diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions by providing a more precise and reliable means of interfacing with the nervous system.

NeuroNexus Technologies’ new invention is set to significantly advance the field of electrode array technology. Its ruggedized penetrating electrode array system provides a more precise and reliable means of interfacing with the nervous system, which could lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions. With their continuous advancements, NeuroNexus Technologies Inc. remains at the forefront of developing innovative solutions for interfacing with the nervous system.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
