Michigan Patent of the Month – January 2021

Inflammation can affect many people in different ways. Inflammation isn’t just the swelling of a bruise, but can also appear deeper within the body when something is awry. It can affect people’s daily lives with diseases such as the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, which affect approximately two-million Americans. IBD results from an immune response that is activated despite the lack of pathogens. While there are some treatments, it often involves suppressing the immune system and taking other medication that can cause negative side effects. IBD is associated with high mortality rates. In a desire to lower these rates and improve patient satisfaction and patient care, First Wave Bio, Inc. has developed methods for treating conditions with abnormal inflammatory response.

First Wave Bio, Inc. uses niclosamide, which is an FDA approved anthelmintic drug. They’ve found that niclosamide kills the T-cells that are associated with the immune response in IBD patients by disrupting the T-cells’s mitochondrial energy cycle. The chemical also doesn’t just kill all T-cells, it targets specific T-cells that are associated with the IBD inflammatory immune response. Niclosamide can be administered locally in the area of inflammation, such as the gastrointestinal tract, for optimal treatment and lowered systemic toxicity that can result from other conventional systemic treatments. It can also be used in combination therapy and can be used to treat side effects of other treatments (e.g., chemotherapy).

Are you developing a new medical treatment? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
