Michigan Patent of the Month – March 2021

An autonomous vehicle is a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment and navigating with little or no user input. Low automation levels have existed for a while in the form of cruise control and parking assistance systems. Fully autonomous vehicles require no human input. These “driverless” rides have been reported as robotic with hard movements. Passengers reported feeling as though human drivers were more capable of a smooth ride. GM Global Technology Operations, LLC is using machine learning to allow autonomous driving to more closely resemble human driving.

Their offline machine learning algorithm learns from day-to-day human driving data which is labeled with passenger feedback on comfort. This method will build an optimal driving style using controlled experiments. Throughout the drive, patients rate their comfort levels on a scale with focuses on reaction times and movements like lane changes. This data offers a real time reference to the vehicle so the motion planning module can adjust as needed. Eventually, multiple profiles will be built to match different people. The vehicle will select the driving profile based on passenger feedback in order to maximize comfort.
