Michigan Patent of the Month – November 2022
Developing paints and coatings can be tricky. These formulations must achieve the desired pigment and coverage while meeting stringent standards and regulations in terms of volatile organic compounds and sustainability. Flying Pig Coatings, LLC are experts in this process and have used this expertise to achieve the impossible.
Their recently patented coating is a cement-resin hybrid product and is a first-to-market solution. The formulation has achieved a breathable finish that stands up well to wind-driven rain. The formula offers an all-in-one block filler, primer, and finishing coat which works well for exteriors with particular challenging surfaces like concrete and brick walls.
The formulation mixes cement with synthetic resins and additives like defoamers, fatty acid derivatives, pigments, and thickeners. Once mixed, the final product can be dispensed out of a paint sprayer, applying an even wet film which cures in place. The unique product combines chemistry and application efficiency to improve durability and weather resistance. The final product has a wholly unique texture and incredibly low VOC concentrations and low toxicity. Through rigorous testing, they have achieved a palette offering with 20 earthly pigments. With these achievements, the industry will be able to reliably paint rough exterior surfaces when pigs fly… or when using Flying Pig Coatings.
