Michigan Patent of the Month – September 2022

Self-driving cars have been an increasing point of interest among everyday drivers. With the addition of multiple sensors and cameras on many vehicles, an increasing amount of research has been done to fully automate the operation of a vehicle, including its ability to park. However, cameras and sensors are typically prone to error, which could lead to unsafe driving practices and accidents.

Magna Electronics, Inc. aims to develop innovative autonomous driving systems that are road safe and easy-to-use. They research and design systems and modules, and provide virtual and physical testing of the vehicle’s functionality and features. They specialize in providing Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) to enhance mobility.

Their development makes use of innovative digital radar technology to provide a 360° view of the car’s surroundings. They implemented 12 ultrasonic sensors to detect the car’s distance from other objects. Multiple exterior sensors and cameras collect information about the surrounding area. Furthermore, the system is pre-programmed to recognize traffic signs, pedestrians, and lane markers. Interestingly, its unique system can learn a path for the vehicle to travel from a drop off location to a parking location (such as in the garage of a house). A valet parking feature is also available, in which the car can autonomously navigate parking structures to effectively park in a designated space. These innovative features and advanced radar technologies strongly support a path to fully autonomous driving.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
