Minnesota Patent of the Month – April 2022

The trū Shrimp Company is the first company to test and validate a true commercial-scale, shallow-water indoor shrimp farming technology in the United States. Their technology is used to produce superior-quality shrimp that are traceable, sustainable and antibiotic free.

90% of the shrimp consumed in the US is imported, leading to an extensive environmental impact from farming practices and shipping emissions. trū Shrimp is set on disrupting this market to bring truly sustainable shrimp to the table.

To support their Tidal Basin™ technology, the company has recently patented their aquaculture filtration system. Two bead filter units are in communication with the tidal basin. The bead units operate sequentially to remove impurities from the water. An inoculation phase is used to flush out undesirable bacteria. trū Shrimp’s tidal basins have a smaller footprint than any traditional shrimp farm and still manage to produce more protein. With their intense filtration systems, they have effectively reduced their water usage and minimized waste byproducts. This allows one volume of water to be used again and again for a truly sustainable aquaculture system.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
