Sleep apnea is the cessation of breathing during sleep, though there are many versions of sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea refers to repetitive pauses in breathing as a result of obstruction to the upper airway. Some treatment methods involve the use of large masks which obstruct and limit movement during sleep. Electrical stimulation to the hypoglossal nerve has also been used as treatment, activating the upper airway muscles so that they maintain an open position. Inspire Medical Systems, Inc. has been working on designing an implantable stimulation system to make sleep apnea treatment easier on those who suffer from it.
The implantable pulse generator (IPG) would be implanted in the pectoral muscle of the patient, with a stimulation lead electrically connected. The lead extends to the hypoglossal nerve. The device communicates with a respiratory pressure sensor to gather respiratory data. The IPG can be turned on manually by the user or automatically based on sensor data. When on, the electrode near the hypoglossal nerve begins to pulse, maintaining an open airway. The IPG provides relief from sleep apnea without any intrusive masks or additional components.
