Minnesota Patent of the Month – February 2025
Vergence Automation has redefined imaging technology with its groundbreaking sub-frame imaging pixel, a leap forward in multi-frame imaging systems. Traditional imaging sensors struggle with motion blur, processing delays, and inefficient data handling. The new invention tackles these challenges with a highly integrated system that processes image data at the pixel level, drastically improving speed, accuracy, and efficiency.
At the heart of the invention is a sophisticated analog pixel processor (APP) that allows each pixel to store and process multiple sub-frames of data simultaneously. This enables real-time computation of spatial and temporal functions, significantly reducing the need for external processing. The processor’s unique compare-and-flag functionality ensures that only relevant data is written and transferred, minimizing power consumption while maximizing performance.
One of the most impressive features of this innovation is its ability to perform neighbor-in-space and neighbor-in-time computations directly within the imaging pixel. This means pixels can analyze data from adjacent frames and surrounding pixels, allowing for enhanced edge detection, motion tracking, and depth mapping. The inclusion of NEWS (north, east, west, and south) registers facilitates seamless data transfer between neighboring pixels, optimizing real-time image processing.
Additionally, the system incorporates an on-chip analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and digital-to-analog converter (DAC), enabling seamless conversion between analog and digital formats. Coupled with on-chip SRAM storage, this architecture allows for efficient data retention and retrieval, further enhancing processing speed and precision.
This invention marks a major advancement in imaging technology, paving the way for high-performance 3D and 4D imaging applications. From robotics to autonomous vehicles and advanced medical imaging, Vergence Automation’s innovation promises to redefine the future of visual data processing, bringing unparalleled speed and intelligence to the world of imaging.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
