Minnesota Patent of the Month – March 2022

Earth Scout, GBC is an innovative, commercial grade precision field sensor developed for continuously gathering real-time weather and soil data year-round. These systems have been developed over the years to monitor crop growth and field conditions to provide farmers and growers with data-driven practices.

They’ve designed systems to track and measure soil moisture, temperature, oxygen levels and more. However, they have since found a natural limitation of any sensor system. If the crop grows, the height of the crop canopy can interfere with sensor data. For instance, light sensors covered by a crop canopy will have very different data points compared to a light sensor above the canopy. Both sets of data are important to predicting the health of the crop.

That’s why Earth Scout has recently designed a telescoping light sensor capable of being mounted and extended above the canopy. The sensor uses a foldaway tripod support system powered with solar energy to lift or lower the sensor. The system is remote controlled to make height adjustments as easy as possible. Earth Scout continually works to enhance their system to meet the needs of every grower.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
