Minnesota Patent of the Month – May 2025
A newly published patent from Cardio Flow, Inc. reveals a next-generation device designed to improve treatment for peripheral artery disease (PAD). U.S. Patent Application No. 20250143743, titled ‘Atherectomy devices and methods’, describes a system built to enhance plaque removal and procedural control in complex arterial pathways.
Revolutionary Helical Cutting System
The device uses a flexible drive shaft embedded with multiple abrasive elements, each positioned at different radial angles. This creates a rotating helical motion that keeps the cutting surface in consistent contact with vessel walls. The goal: more even plaque removal with less risk of vessel injury.
Improved Balance and Navigation
A key feature is the inclusion of a distal stability element that aligns with the central axis of the shaft. This adds balance during operation and helps prevent sudden or unsafe movements. Together, these features support smoother control inside tight or curved arteries.
Real-World Benefits
By making it easier to safely and effectively remove plaque, this invention could boost success rates in PAD procedures. It’s designed to simplify navigation, reduce complications, and shorten recovery times—offering a better experience for both doctors and patients.
Cardio Flow’s Innovation Push
Cardio Flow, Inc. continues to advance minimally invasive vascular technologies. This new application underscores the company’s commitment to solving real-world clinical challenges through design innovation.
