Mississippi Patent of the Month – December 2021

Zavation Medical Products, LLC is an employee-owned medical device company that designs, develops, manufactures, and distributes medical device products. Their products provide comprehensive medical solutions to help surgeons and treat patients worldwide.

Recently, the company has developed an expanding orthopedic implant to aid in the surgical treatment of spinal disorders including degenerative disc disease. Zavation designed this expandable implant to be used with autogenous bone graft techniques.

The intervertebral implant is made with two distinct portions connected by a wedge. The wedge can be controlled and moved along one axis of the implant, forcing the upper portion and lower portion away from each other to effectively expand the implant. An actuator is used to move the wedge as needed. When implanted, this device can efficiently stabilize the vertebra, increasing the intervertebral space as needed to realign the spine. Bone graft materials are then used to repair and rebuild diseased or damaged bones. In this way, the device can aid in spinal surgeries, expanding to make the correct implant size and allowing for modification during surgery as needed.
