Mississippi Patent of the Month – January 2021
If you’re familiar with medical language, or are a fan of medical TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy or The Resident, you might know that orthopedics is the branch of medicine that deals with bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. You might also know that orthopedic doctors sometimes use something called an internal fixation device. These devices help stabilize bones when they’re healing after a fracture or a break. Sometimes they’re in the form of metal plates, bars, wires, or screws. Sometimes when screws are used with a plate, they can move and cause the screw lock to flex upwards, which can damage the screw lock and the internal fixation device as a whole. Zavation Medical Products LLC has developed an internal fixation device with rotatable screw locks to mitigate this issue.
The innovative internal fixation device by Zavation Medical Products consists of a plate with screw holes. The plate has a rotatable screw lock with a lateral flange on the lock head that locks the plate in place. While locked, the screw extends into several gaps within the plate, and the retention part of the plate covers the lock head. This mechanism ensures the lock doesn’t come off the plate, so the internal fixation device can be as effective as possible for bone fracture treatment.
Are you adapting existing medical technology for a new application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
