Mississippi Patent of the Month – October 2021
You may have used those electric bug zappers that look like tennis rackets. These, among other inventions, have attempted to use an attracting light to lure insects into the trap. They usually use an ultraviolet light surrounded by an electric grid. While effective, these cannot be used in the food service industry since the electric current causes the insect to explode. The food service industry instead uses adhesive insect traps, often attached to a UV light. These however, are unsightly and give patrons the idea that the restaurant has a bug problem. KP Solutions, Inc. has created an alternative which meets the needs of the food service industry.
Their design creates a little container with UV light inside. A set of floor, sidewalls, and a light diffuser plate make up the enclosed visible light chamber. An adhesive board is positioned inside the chamber but can be removed and replaced as needed. Insects are attracted to the UV light and find their way inside the housing, getting stuck to the adhesive board. When it needs to be changed, the adhesive board can slide out and be replaced. The device can be mounted to a wall and the side which faces out has a logo plate. The logo can be customized to reflect the individual restaurant’s name or some design they desire. Depending on the design, the UV light can be used as a backlight to the log, providing a dual purpose. The design is perfect for the food service industry, catching pesky insects without any contamination of the food.
