Mississippi Patent of the Month – September 2021

Cushioned furniture is both ornamental and functional. We all know what it’s like to sit down on a couch, where someone else was just sitting, and feel how warm they left it. It’s often one of those uncomfortable feelings we would like to avoid. These cushions also flatten as we sit on them – due to the person’s weight, ambient temperature, and how long they sat there. Temperature – as it turns out- plays a big role with the comfort and functionality of a cushion. Max Home, LLC has taken this into consideration and developed a sofa cushion with cooling effects to improve comfort.

Their design uses gel infused viscoelastic pads with a foam pad in between. The foam pad is surrounded by a laminated sheet. The viscoelastic pads are infused with a thermogel material capable of wicking heat that would otherwise be absorbed into the insulated foam pad. So when someone sits on the couch, they compress the cushion but the pads take their heat and expel it out. This gives the user a thermophysical sense of cooled seating, keeping both the seat and the user cooled and comfortable. When they move, the already cooled seat is able to return to it’s fully puffed position more quickly. The purpose of having a gel pad on both sides is to make sure the cushion is still flippable – a feature loved by many people. By being able to flip the cushion, you spread out the wear on the cushion and extend its life.
