Mississippi Patent of the Month – September 2022

As many of us are aware, asphalt is a flexible glue that binds aggregates together to primarily assemble asphalt concrete (AC) pavements. While the use of asphalt is cost-efficient and safe to use, its weak binding properties makes it susceptible to aging and separation due to exposure to air, temperature, UV radiation, and water. These factors cause the asphalt to become brittle and deteriorate in a short amount of time, causing homeowners and businesses to repair and replace their pavements in as little as 2 years.

Blacklidge Emulsions, Inc. is focused on developing products to build roads in a safe and easy manner. Their formulations boast superior strength and durability, and make use of recycled materials to generate high-performance builds. This allows businesses, homeowners, and everyday consumers to have access to cost-efficient materials that are environmentally friendly and long-lasting.

Their development consists of a modified asphalt composition containing a base asphalt and an aging resistance additive. This additive is made up of an oil blend that consists of low molecular weight aromatic hydrocarbons that effectively bind AC components together to resist degradation. The additive chemically bonds with and disperses existing asphaltene molecular clusters to create an optimum balance of chemical fractions, leading to improved field aging performance. With this new development, AC pavements can effectively resist aging, cracks, and deterioration for two decades, making this the most cost-friendly and high-performance option on the market.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
