Missouri Patent of the Month – June 2021
Oftentimes in a surgical procedure, some operators (doctors, nurses etc) are in the sterile, surgical room. There are other operators and support personnel in separate, non-sterile areas. Since they are working on the same procedure, they need to view the same data which means multiple medical systems must connect and interact. Other issues can arise as surgeons must maintain sterility and might not be able to interact with the medical equipment as needed. An alternative system is needed to overcome this – which is why Sentiar, Inc. has developed an augmented reality (AR) system.
Their AR system offers visualization of graphics which are viewed by any user wearing the head gear. These virtual displays can be a 2D monitor style, or a 3D hologram. These displays can overlay reality and be interactive. Further, the AR system can be controlled without contact and therefore maintaining sterility. Through hand gestures, voice commands, and gaze tracking, users can interact with and control the graphics and system. The data on display is gathered from the sensors already used in procedures, such as catheters and 3D electroanatomic mapping systems. Surgeons can interact with these displays to better inform their surgical decision making.
