Missouri Patent of the Month – November 2022
A planer is a piece of woodworking equipment capable of trimming boards to specific and consistent thicknesses. A molder can cut wood to specific profiles and shapes. These two pieces can be combined in order to achieve both the desired shape and thickness at once, with consistency across boards. However, the knife position and speed is essential to a high quality finish. Woodmaster Tools, Inc. has designed a gauge that assures these knives are always precisely aligned.
The set-up gauge can be mounted to any typical wood shaper. The gauge positions the array of cutting knives within the cutting head pockets. Most rotating cutting heads are designed with at least two pockets. The gauge prevents the blades from moving within these pockets, creating a consistent position as the knives rotate downwards towards the bed of the shaper. The knife positions must be precisely maintained, down to the degree. The gauge uses a set of magnetic discs to maintain this position, restraining the cutting knives from moving out of place. The magnetic discs are attached to a rod along the support bar. The magnetic discs extend out, contacting the knives and creating a common inset distance from one side of the pocket. This inset distance is maintained in all pockets.
Woodmaster Tools has been designing and manufacturing molders/planers and supporting equipment since 1980. Their products are sold globally, helping woodworkers around the world to perfect their craft.
