Montana Patent of the Month – March 2022

Since welding is meant to reliably join metals together the integrity of the weld is essential. Non-destructive testing (NDT) is the most common testing method. One NDT method propagates energy onto the weld, yielding signals that can be displayed as waveform images. For instance, acoustic waves could be presented as phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT).

Loenbro Inspection, LLC has designed a system that can effectively display these PAUT images. Their design couples together export, transformation, and merger modules. The export module extracts images and data from the PAUT inspection. This information is then moved into the transformation module to create a multi-dimensional representation of the data. Finally, the merger module combines the information from these two modules into an evaluation report for each inspected weld joint.

This system allows for the inspection and graphical generation of multiple weld inspections at once. Loenbro has decades of experience with welding. They’ve used this expertise to enhance the welding industry as a whole, developing technology and tools to increase efficiency and capability.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
