Montana Patent of the Month – November 2022

Stone Glacier, Inc. was founded with the intention of making backcountry hunts easier. After 15 years of solo sheep hunts from the Dall country of Alaska to the unlimited districts of Montana’s Beartooth Wilderness, the founders began designing a range of ultralight backpacking gear. The past 15 years have seen an organic development process filled with testing, refining, and research. After hundreds of miles of testing on the trail, years of research and design, this goal has been accomplished; but their journey isn’t over. The company continues to innovate, building accessories and tools that meet their ultralight and technical durability needs.

Recently, the company has developed and patented their binocular harness. Built with their OptikFit™ Technology, the harness offers a modular design capable of fitting any compatible binocular. The low profile allows the harness to be conveniently worn under a backpack without discomfort. Adjustable straps also allow the wearer to move the harness between high and tight or low and loose.

When designing this harness, the company had to consider how to reduce noise and maintain stealthy movements. This means no magnets and no fasteners which might make clicking noises. The harness uses a forward open hood which stays securely open when needed and closes quickly – and quietly – when fast movements are needed.

The OptikFit™ technology allows the harness to be adjusted to your optics. Rather than struggling with your optics moving around in your harness, the front hood height, shock cord tension system, and back panel height can all be adjusted for individual fits. Between the fabric and ergonomic design, Stone Glacier has achieved a comfortable, ultralight, stealthy harness.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
