Nebraska Patent of the Month – March 2025

Geokey’s new patented invention turns smartphones into secure digital keys, opening doors to a future without physical credentials. The system offers a seamless, location-based access solution for buildings, vehicles, and more—without needing Wi-Fi or cellular data.

Turning Phones into Precision Access Tools

The innovation, titled “System and Method for a Mobile Device to Grant Access to a Lock” (US Patent No. 11,260,690), uses geofencing and encrypted signals to determine when and where access should be granted. Unlike traditional keycards or fobs, this mobile-first system activates only when a user enters a defined perimeter, ensuring both convenience and security.

This patented method allows administrators to control access remotely while users unlock doors with a tap on their phones. It eliminates common issues like lost keycards, shared credentials, or access lapses during internet outages.

Real-World Impact for Security and Facilities Management

Geokey’s platform has wide applications in property management, co-working spaces, and fleet vehicle access. By leveraging geolocation and secure authentication, the system supports dynamic, scalable control for modern businesses.

The company claims the system reduces operational costs while increasing user convenience. Facilities no longer need to reissue physical keys or manage outdated fobs.

This smart access solution reflects a broader shift toward contactless, mobile-enabled infrastructure—streamlining how we interact with secure spaces.
