Nevada Patent of the Month – April 2025

NexTech Batteries has earned UN DOT 38.3.5 safety certification for its semi solid state lithium sulfur battery. The certified 5.4 amp hour cell is built on a patented pulsing method that enhances battery performance. This milestone confirms the battery’s readiness for commercial transport and real-world use.

Patent-Backed Innovation

The battery technology is protected under U.S. Patent No. 12272981, titled “Pulse current method of enhancing the functionality of a battery.” The invention uses controlled electrical pulses to improve the conditioning of lithium sulfur cells. These pulses, defined by specific timing and power characteristics, increase both efficiency and durability.

Unlike traditional lithium ion batteries, NexTech’s solution uses sulfur instead of rare materials like cobalt or nickel. This reduces cost and environmental impact while offering higher energy density and lighter weight.

Real-World Impact

The certified cell has passed rigorous safety testing required for transport by air and sea. This opens the door for use in electric vehicles, grid storage, and mobile electronics. NexTech is currently working with major automotive manufacturers and research partners to bring the technology to market.

The company sees this certification as a launch point for scaling production and replacing older lithium ion technology with a more sustainable and higher-performing alternative.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
