Nevada Patent of the Month – June 2022

Self defense is a valid concern for many individuals. While some may be comfortable with carrying a handgun, there are still many who aren’t. On top of comfortability, local restrictions and laws may limit how armed you can be. For these reasons – amongst other things – non lethal self-protection solutions are continually being worked on.

Hero Defense Systems, LLC are a part of this ongoing endeavor and have recently designed a non-lethal solution that uses PAVA – or capsaicin – as an irritant. The device has a nitrogen-powered launcher to shoot cartridges with a compressed gas containing the PAVA. The launcher is able to achieve speeds of 200 feet per second with 15 Joules of energy so that the cartridge breaks on impact, releasing the PAVA as a cloud around the target. The PAVA causes immediate burning of the eyes, nose, mouth, and skin – acting essentially as a projectile pepper spray.

The projectile cartridges are each sized at 3g and contain 10% PAVA as the active ingredient. This high grade, synthetic capsaicin works by binding to receptors that send pain and heat signals to the brain. The target experiences intense burning on the skin, blurred vision, and discomfort for up to an hour with no long term effects. This offers a reliable non-lethal solution to bring individuals peace of mind as they go about their day.
