Nevada Patent of the Month – November 2021
Following the events of COVID-19, many countries introduced mitigation methods which were meant to bring about social distancing. These ranged from limiting the number of people in a grocery store to requiring tests before leaving a country. With the impact that the pandemic had on both our personal lives and the economy, it’s no surprise that these measures are still in place, trying to limit it from rising in case numbers again. Unfortunately, even with the availability of rapid tests, if you forget your results at home, they are of no use. OpenClear, Inc. has designed a system that would allow businesses to verify a customer’s infection status on the spot, further restricting the spread of the virus.
Their system provides a simple device or app that can connect with testing facilities – or at home testing units – which stores pathogen status (eg. positive or negative test results). These results, along with other information such as your identification – are stored in a QR code. The store’s entryway device scans this QR code and can admit either a PASS or BLOCK based on the results. The store’s system can be set up with personalized rules. For instance, an airport could employ the system to require a negative test within the past three days since flights are higher risk areas (confined space for large periods of time), while a store may require a less restrictive rule. This system could be implemented nearly anywhere, from borders to airports, and bars to concerts. Not only can it limit the spread of COVID by preventing infected (or recently exposed) users from entering, it can provide a tracking system to alert those who may now be at risk of exposure. It can also be extended to include other pathogens.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
