Nevada Patent of the Month – September 2021
A biofilm is a population of prokaryotic cells growing on a surface. They are enclosed in a polymeric material which allows the cells to adhere to themselves and other surfaces. Research shows that unwanted biofilms are responsible for the detriment of cooling-water towers, food processing plants, and the onset of human microbial infections. The human intestinal tract has a whole reservoir of antibiotic-resistant biofilm bacteria. ProThera, Inc., a nutritionally focused healthcare company, has developed a treatment for these biofilms, offering an anti-biofilm medication.
They use known enzymes which treat or inhibit biofilms, though the enzyme selected depends on the target biofilm. The medication is orally administered a few times a day. The formulation uses a natural antimicrobial to prep the enzyme. They have created formulations for the following targets:
- Enterococci
- Staphylococcus
- Pseudomonas
- Helicobacter pylori
- Listeria
- Campylobacter
- Bacillus anthracis
- Yersinia
And more. This formulation can be used in conjunction with regular antibiotics or antimicrobials. This helps to ensure the biofilm is completely eradicated thanks to the dual force fighting mechanism. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are truly a force to be reckoned with, getting stronger each time the remaining bacteria replicate and pass on their resistant genes. ProTherea’s approach to targeting and eliminating these bacteria could truly make a difference in the healthcare field.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
