New Hampshire Patent of the Month – April 2021

Wildfires can be a great risk to people and their property. Even after they burn out, they can contribute to poor water and air quality, loss of wildlife habitat, increased likelihood of floods and erosion. While early detection is key to protecting people and managing the fire, there aren’t great detection options. Sentry Systems, Inc. has designed an automated distributed monitoring system to provide data and offer risk mitigation.

The system offers both detection and management features for wildfires. The system is made of multiple remote units which are placed throughout the area of interest. Each unit has sensors such as radiation, seismic, soil moisture, temperature and so on. They also include lightning detectors, a significant feature considering lightning is a common ignitor. In a pre-fires tage, the system regularly provides measurements of conditions based on sensor detection. These measurements are used to calculate an accurate fire index for the area. These sensors also provide early fire detection with precise location data using smoke, temperature, and gas metrics. In a fire-fighting stage, the system monitors the spread of the fire, tracking both predicted and actual change in direction. It also tracks the location of firefighters to help ensure they remain as safe as possible using a personnel device attached to the individuals. The system also has settings for post-fire monitoring, detecting if or when the fire spurs back up. This post-fire management also offers insight into the effectiveness of the firefighting strategy so that future methods can be improved.

Are you developing new software for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
