New Hampshire Patent of the Month – December 2021

Wilcox Industries, Corp. is a manufacturer of tactical equipment for the military and law enforcement. After attaining their first patent in 1993 for a laser aiming device integrated into a handgun, Wilcox has become an industry leader in innovative tactical equipment. Recently, they have been awarded a patent for a modular underwater torpedo system.

Wilcox designed this torpedo system with 4 key modules:

  • Head module
  • Steering Control module
  • Power module
  • Propulsion module

The head is interchangeable depending on the required hydrodynamic resistance and uses a guidance tool to better move in the required direction. The guidance tool ranges from laser to camera based. The steering control module is made of a cylindrical shell with fins spaced equally apart. The fins can be folded into the body or extended out to maneuver the torpedo as needed. Each fin can be controlled separately to maximize precision. The propulsion module uses a series of propellers to propel the torpedo, and the power module can accommodate different size battery packs. With this design, the torpedo is not only powerful but customizable to the situation at hand and delivers with great precision.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify).
