New Jersey Patent of the Month – May 2021

Human leukocyte antigen-DR (HLA-DR) is one of three versions of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) – which code for immune system proteins. Plenty of research recently has gone into antibody based lymphoma therapy using HLA-DR. Anti-HLA-DR antibodies or conjugates can be used in blood based cancer therapies more effectively when combined with kinase inhibitors. Some research has gone into this combination therapy with promising results. Immunomedics, Inc. has been developing a combination therapy using Bruton’s kinase inhibitors and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitors as well as the improved administration method to increase the treatment efficacy further.

This combination of antibodies and kinases can be given either once or on a repetitive basis as needed. The therapy is administered through an IV over the course of approximately 1-2 hours. They can also be used alongside other traditional treatments like radiation or chemotherapy. This controlled release, combined with the formulation of the treatment have shown reduction in solid tumor size and reduction of metastases, effectively treating cancers that were previously resistant to traditional treatments.
